Successful proximal splenorenal shunt with interposition PTFE graft for extrahepatic portal venous obstruction

12 Feb, 2021

A 30-year-old Iraqi resident was diagnosed with extrahepatic portal venous obstruction (EHPVO, a condition characterized by splenic enlargement resulting from portal hypertension due to replacement of main portal vein by collaterals). At an innovative sugery, a proximal splenorenal shunt using an interposition PTFE graft between the splenic vein collateral and the left renal vein was done on December 18th, 2020 by Dr Vivek Mangla. Patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged 5 days after surgery.

Proximal splenorenal shunt, also known as Linton’s shunt provides a good long lasting solution in patients with portal hypertension due to EHPVO. Use of interposition graft can help ensure successful outcomes in difficult scenarios.
